Questions & Answers about Wybieram tych kandydatów, bo są młodzi.
Why does the direct object tych kandydatów end in -ów and -ych?
Because kandydat is a virile noun (a male person). For virile nouns and the words describing them, the accusative plural used for direct objects looks exactly like the genitive plural. That is why we borrow the genitive endings -ych for the pronoun and -ów for the noun.
If we are talking about the same male candidates, why doesn't młodzi have an accusative ending too?
Because młodzi is in a new clause after bo (because). In this second part, the candidates are the subject of the verb są (are). Subjects always use the nominative case. Since we are talking about a group involving male people, we use the virile nominative plural form młodzi instead of the basic adjective młody.
Does tych mean these or those?
It can mean either! Polish often uses the same word for these and those based on context. The base word is ten (this or that). If you needed to be very specific about those candidates over there, you would add a prefix and use tamtych kandydatów.
What is the infinitive of the verb wybieram?
The infinitive is wybierać (to choose or to select). It belongs to the -am/-asz conjugation group, which is why it simply takes the -m ending to become wybieram (I choose).
