Questions & Answers about Uczę się i teraz mówię po polsku.
Why is there no word for "I" in this sentence?
In Polish, the verb endings already tell you who is doing the action. Both uczę and mówię end in -ę, which is the standard present tense ending for "I" doing something. You only use the word Ja (I) if you really want to emphasize it.
Why is the word się used after uczę?
The base verb uczyć actually means "to teach". To say "to learn", Polish uses uczyć się, which literally translates to "to teach oneself". The word się is a reflexive pronoun meaning "oneself".
Does uczę się mean "I learn" or "I am learning"?
It means both! Polish does not have a separate continuous tense like English does. Whether it means "I learn" as a general habit or "I am learning" right this second depends entirely on the context of the conversation.
Why does the sentence use po polsku instead of just the noun polski?
When talking about speaking, understanding, or reading a language, Polish uses the word po plus a special adverb form. Po polsku literally means "in the Polish way". You will see this exact same pattern with all languages, such as po angielsku for English or po hiszpańsku for Spanish.
