Questions & Answers about Podczas występu wyszedł z magicznych skrzyń!
How does the word order here demonstrate "end-focus"?
In Polish, the most important, new, or surprising information is usually placed at the absolute end of the sentence. By putting z magicznych skrzyń at the end, the speaker makes the magical chests the "punchline" of the sentence. If the sentence were Z magicznych skrzyń wyszedł podczas występu, the emphasis would shift away from the chests to the fact that he did this specifically during the performance.
What case is skrzyń, and why does it seem to have no ending?
It is the genitive plural form of the feminine noun skrzynia (chest). Many feminine nouns drop their final vowel in the genitive plural, leaving a "zero ending" (just like kobieta becomes kobiet). Because skrzynia ends in -nia, dropping the vowel leaves us with the soft -ń sound, making it skrzyń.
The preposition z often means "with" and takes the instrumental case. Why is it used with the genitive here?
The preposition z only means "with" (and takes the instrumental case) when talking about accompaniment. When z means "out of" or "from" (showing motion away from an enclosed space or origin), it requires the genitive case. Since he is coming out of the chests, we need the genitive phrase z magicznych skrzyń.
Why use the prefixed verb wyszedł instead of just szedł?
Szedł is an imperfective verb of motion simply meaning "he was walking" in a single direction. The prefix wy- adds the specific meaning of moving "out" of something, and simultaneously makes the verb perfective (a completed action). Wyszedł pairs perfectly with the preposition z to describe the completed action of exiting.
