Questions & Answers about Dlaczego ten algorytm pozbawia nas kontroli?
Why is kontroli in the Genitive case?
This sentence uses pozbawiać (to deprive), which is a verb of deprivation. In Polish, these verbs require the thing you are losing or being deprived of to take the Genitive case. That is why the Nominative kontrola becomes the Genitive kontroli.
Since verbs of deprivation take the Genitive, is nas also in the Genitive case here?
Actually, no. The verb pozbawiać takes two objects: the person being deprived is in the Accusative case, and the thing they lose is in the Genitive case. While nas (us) happens to look the exact same in both Accusative and Genitive, grammatically it is the Accusative direct object here.
Could I use the perfective verb pozbawi in this sentence instead?
It would change the meaning to the future tense. The imperfective pozbawia is used here because we are asking about an ongoing, general characteristic of the algorithm (Why does it deprive us?). If you used pozbawi, the sentence would mean 'Why will this algorithm deprive us of control?' referring to a single, completed future action.
I sometimes mix up whether feminine Genitive endings should be -i or -y. Why does kontrola become kontroli?
Feminine nouns ending in -a take either -y or -i in the Genitive singular depending on the preceding consonant. Because kontrola ends in -la, and l behaves as a soft consonant in Polish grammar, it must take the soft ending -i. If the preceding consonant were hard (like -n in wiosna), it would take -y (wiosny).
