Questions & Answers about Gdyby to drzewisko zniknęło, mielibyśmy więcej słońca.
How does the suffix -isko change the meaning of drzewo in this specific context?
Adding -isko to drzewo creates the augmentative drzewisko. While it literally means a huge tree, augmentatives often carry a pejorative or complaining tone. In this sentence, the speaker is clearly annoyed because the tree is blocking the light, so it expresses frustration, acting more like "this big, annoying tree" rather than just describing its physical size.
What gender is the word drzewisko?
It is neuter. Augmentatives created with the -isko or -sko suffix are grammatically neuter, which is an important rule to remember because it applies even if the original base noun was masculine or feminine. You can see this neuter agreement in the sentence through the pronoun to and the neuter verb form zniknęło.
Why do we use the past tense form zniknęło if we are talking about a hypothetical present or future?
Polish forms hypothetical conditionals (similar to the English second conditional) by using the particle gdyby plus the past tense form of the verb. Even though the scenario is not in the past, the grammatical structure for expressing "if it disappeared" always requires that past tense shape.
Why is the word for sun in the form słońca instead of its base form słońce?
The word więcej (more) acts as a quantifier. In Polish, quantifiers require the noun that follows them to take the genitive case. Słońca is the singular genitive form of the neuter noun słońce.
