In Polish, you can modify nouns to make them unusually large or imposing by creating augmentatives (zgrubienia). Beyond emphasizing size, augmentatives carry strong emotional weight—expressing awe, humor, affection, or a negative, pejorative tone.
The Suffixes "-isko" and "-ysko"
Create augmentatives by adding the suffix -isko (or -ysko after hard consonants) to a noun's root.
Crucially, words formed with these suffixes become neuter nouns ending in -o, regardless of their original gender. Any adjectives or pronouns modifying them must also take the neuter form (like to).
For example, the masculine noun pies (dog) becomes the neuter psisko (big dog):
| This big dog needs a new house. | To psisko potrzebuje nowego domu. |
Similarly, kot (cat) becomes kocisko:
| My sister's big cat sleeps all day. | Kocisko mojej siostry śpi cały dzień. |
When a stem ends in a hard or altered consonant (like sz or rz), the suffix is spelled -ysko. Ptak (bird) alters its stem slightly to become ptaszysko:
| Some huge bird is sitting on the roof. | Na dachu siedzi jakieś ptaszysko. |
Exaggerating Nature, Features, and Buildings
You might notice slight vowel or consonant shifts in the root when forming augmentatives, such as wiatr (wind) softening into wietrzysko:
| This strong wind is making noise at night. | To wietrzysko hałasuje w nocy. |
| An old, huge tree grows in front of my house. | Przed moim domem rośnie stare drzewisko. |
They are perfect for expressive, humorous descriptions of physical traits. Nos (nose) grows into nosisko:
| He has the same huge nose as his grandfather. | On ma takie samo nosisko jak jego dziadek. |
Augmentatives are also frequently attached to buildings to make them sound massive or overwhelming. The masculine noun zamek (castle) transforms into the impressive zamczysko:
| We intend to visit this old huge castle tomorrow. | Jutro zamierzamy zwiedzać to stare zamczysko. |
Even an ordinary dom (house) can become a gigantic domisko:
| Why did they build such a huge house? | Dlaczego zbudowali takie domisko? |
