Upgrading Temporal Clauses
When reading biographies or historical texts in Polish, you will rarely see clunky sentences like Po tym jak pisarz odniósł wielki sukces... (After the writer achieved a great success...). Instead, sophisticated writing uses syntactic reduction. By replacing the basic temporal clause (po tym jak + past tense) with an adverbial anterior participle, the sentence becomes much more elegant and concise.
| Having achieved a great success, the writer wrote another work. | Odniósłszy wielki sukces, pisarz napisał kolejne dzieło. |
| Having obtained the title, the researcher left for the capital. | Uzyskawszy tytuł, badacz wyjechał do stolicy. |
Discussing Biographies and History
This advanced structure is incredibly common when recounting the milestones of historical figures, researchers, and artists. You will often see it used to describe obtaining a title, finishing a great work of art, or concluding an agreement or alliance.
| Having finished the difficult project, the team obtained an award as well as wide recognition. | Zakończywszy trudny projekt, zespół uzyskał nagrodę oraz szerokie uznanie. |
| Having ended his career, the famous politician published his memoirs. | Zakończywszy karierę, sławny polityk opublikował swoje wspomnienia. |
As a reminder, you form this participle from the third-person masculine singular past tense. Drop the -ł and add -wszy if preceded by a vowel (zakończył → zakończywszy), or keep the -ł and add -szy if preceded by a consonant (zawarł → zawarłszy). The hidden subject of the participle must always match the subject of the main clause.
| Having concluded an alliance with the neighbor, the kingdom regained peace. | Zawarłszy sojusz z sąsiadem, królestwo odzyskało spokój. |
| Having received an important title, the artist achieved fame as well as great recognition. | Otrzymawszy ważny tytuł, artysta zdobył sławę oraz wielkie uznanie. |
While the participle clause usually sits at the beginning of the sentence to set the chronological stage, it can also appear in the second half for emphasis. This is especially common when paired with dopiero (only) or już (already).
| The general took power only having achieved final victory. | Generał objął władzę, dopiero odniósłszy ostateczne zwycięstwo. |
| The hero left the country only having achieved worldwide fame. | Bohater wyjechał z kraju, dopiero zdobywszy światową sławę. |
