Replacing actions with "zamiast"

To express doing one action in place of another, Polish uses the preposition zamiast (instead of). When replacing an action, simply follow zamiast with the verb in its infinitive form.

You can put the zamiast clause at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle, just like in English. Remember to separate the clauses with a comma.

Instead of putting everything off until later, you must start acting.
Zamiast odkładać wszystko na później, musisz zacząć działać.
You always put off difficult tasks, instead of asking for help.
Zawsze odkładasz trudne zadania, zamiast poprosić o pomoc.
He always looks for excuses, instead of stopping delaying.
On zawsze szuka wymówek, zamiast przestać zwlekać.

Changing plans and shifting focus

When discussing changes to your schedule, fighting distractions, or prioritizing tasks, the pattern remains exactly the same.

Instead of constantly postponing this meeting, we should cancel it.
Zamiast ciągle przekładać to spotkanie, powinniśmy je odwołać.
Instead of working, you constantly get distracted.
Zamiast pracować, ciągle się rozpraszasz.
Instead of watching television, you should concentrate on priorities.
Zamiast oglądać telewizję, powinieneś skoncentrować się na priorytetach.
Instead of dealing with trivial matters, we must remember about priorities.
Zamiast zajmować się błahymi sprawami, musimy pamiętać o priorytetach.
This weekend I intend to be productive, instead of just lazing around.
W ten weekend zamierzam być produktywny, zamiast tylko się lenić.
