Simultaneous Processes: w miarę jak
To describe two actions or processes developing at the same time, use the phrase w miarę jak (as / in proportion as).
Because this phrase highlights ongoing changes, it is almost always paired with imperfective (continuous) verbs.
| As plants grow, they need more water. | W miarę jak rośliny rosną, potrzebują więcej wody. |
| As spring approaches, the forest becomes green. | W miarę jak nadchodzi wiosna, las staje się zielony. |
You can also apply this structure to simultaneous personal growth or progression:
| As I study more, I become a better student. | W miarę jak więcej się uczę, staję się lepszym studentem. |
Warming Up and Cooling Down
Notice how Polish uses reflexive verbs like ocieplać się (to get warmer) and ochładzać się (to get colder) to describe shifting temperatures.

| As it gets colder, leaves fall from the trees. | W miarę jak się ochładza, liście opadają z drzew. |
Days Lengthening and Shortening
Similarly, use the reflexive verbs wydłużać się (to lengthen) and skracać się (to shorten) for changing lengths.
| As summer approaches, the days lengthen. | W miarę jak nadchodzi lato, dni się wydłużają. |
| As the days shorten, we have less time. | W miarę jak dni się skracają, mamy mniej czasu. |
The Agricultural Cycle
Farming and plant lifecycles are full of gradual processes. Crops will gradually ripen (dojrzewać), or without water, wither (usychać).
| As fruits ripen, they become sweet. | W miarę jak owoce dojrzewają, stają się słodkie. |
| As water is lacking, the plants wither. | W miarę jak brakuje wody, rośliny usychają. |
Eventually, these processes culminate in the harvest. In Polish, the word for harvest, żniwa, is always plural.
