Questions & Answers about W miarę jak nadchodzi wiosna, las staje się zielony.
Why do we use imperfective verbs like nadchodzi and staje się with w miarę jak?
The conjunction w miarę jak meaning "as" or "in proportion as" connects two gradual, simultaneous processes. Because these changes are ongoing and parallel, you must use imperfective (continuous) verbs. Perfective verbs wouldn't work because they describe completed, one-time actions.
Why is the adjective zielony in the Nominative case? Doesn't the verb stawać się require the Instrumental case?
When stawać się (to become) is followed by a noun, that noun must be in the Instrumental case (for example, las staje się domem - the forest becomes a home). However, when it is followed only by an adjective describing a change of state, modern Polish strongly prefers the Nominative case (zielony). Using the Instrumental here (zielonym) would sound slightly outdated or overly formal.
Could I use the basic verb idzie instead of nadchodzi to say that spring is coming?
You will sometimes hear idzie wiosna in everyday speech, but nadchodzi is much better here. The prefix nad- adds the meaning of "approaching" or "getting closer." It is the standard, natural way to talk about seasons, time, or events drawing near, which perfectly matches the gradual feeling of w miarę jak.
Why is the word order nadchodzi wiosna instead of wiosna nadchodzi?
