"Other" vs. "Somewhere else"
When changing plans or looking for alternatives, you will frequently use inny ("other" or "different") and gdzie indziej ("somewhere else").
- inny is an adjective. Like all Polish adjectives, it must match the noun it modifies in gender, number, and case (such as the feminine genitive innej).
- gdzie indziej is a fixed adverb describing a location or destination. It never changes its form.
| We are looking for a different cafe, so we will go somewhere else. | Szukamy innej kawiarni, więc pójdziemy gdzie indziej. |
| Another employee will check the availability, so we can wait somewhere else. | Inny pracownik sprawdzi dostępność, więc możemy zaczekać gdzie indziej. |
Adjusting arrangements
When confirming availability or dealing with an unexpected complication, you often have to postpone an event or choose a different variant. Notice how inny directly describes nouns, while gdzie indziej modifies verbs.
| This variant does not suit us, therefore we must postpone the meeting to another day. | Ten wariant nam nie pasuje, zatem musimy przełożyć spotkanie na inny dzień. |
| Due to a complication, we will check a different schedule or move the meeting somewhere else. | Z powodu komplikacji sprawdzimy inny grafik albo przeniesiemy spotkanie gdzie indziej. |
"Someone else" with kto indziej
To say "someone else", Polish uses the phrase kto indziej. Just like in gdzie indziej, the word indziej stays fixed, pairing here with the pronoun kto ("who").
| Someone else proposed a different schedule, therefore we will change the plans. | Kto indziej zaproponował inny grafik, zatem zmienimy plany. |
| Let someone else check the availability, until we find a different variant. | Niech kto indziej sprawdzi dostępność, dopóki nie znajdziemy innego wariantu. |
