The Prefix "wy-": Buying Everything Up
You often see the prefix wy- used to indicate moving "out" of something. However, it also commonly acts as an exhaustive prefix. It shows that an action has been taken to its absolute limit—until a resource is completely utilized, acquired, or depleted.
For example, when consumers face huge demand, they might buy up (wykupić) all available stock. If this happens instantly, there is nothing left!
| Consumers bought up all the products because there was a great demand. | Konsumenci wykupili wszystkie produkty, bo był wielki popyt. |
| We didn't manage to buy this, because people instantly bought everything up. | Nie zdążyliśmy tego kupić, bo ludzie wszystko błyskawicznie wykupili. |
Exhausting Resources
To express that a supply or resource has completely run out, use the verb wyczerpać (to exhaust). When referring to resources running out on their own, use the reflexive pronoun się.
| Our resources ran out, so we cannot produce new models. | Nasze zasoby się wyczerpały, więc nie możemy produkować nowych modeli. |
| When the stocks run out, this good will no longer be available. | Kiedy zapasy się wyczerpią, ten towar nie będzie już dostępny. |
Utilizing Completely
Another crucial exhaustive verb in business is wykorzystać. It means to utilize something fully, such as a budget, raw materials, or an opportunity, until it is used up.
| We have already used up the entire budget for advertising this year. | Wykorzystaliśmy już cały budżet na reklamę w tym roku. |
| That which we had in the warehouse, we used up to the end. | To, co mieliśmy w magazynie, wykorzystaliśmy do końca. |
Limits and Buying in Bulk
To prevent stock from disappearing instantly, a store might need to establish a limit because their stock is limited. This stops customers from clearing out the shelves by buying items in bulk (hurtowo).
| Despite the limited budget, the boss utilized every opportunity. | Pomimo ograniczonego budżetu szefowa wykorzystała każdą okazję. |
| We established a limit so that people wouldn't buy in bulk. | Ustaliliśmy limit, żeby ludzie nie kupowali hurtowo. |
