Clauses of excess (zbyt... żeby)

To express that something is too extreme for a specific action to happen, Polish uses a combination of zbyt or za (too) and żeby (in order to / to).

The Basic Structure

This structure mirrors English closely when the subject of the sentence is the person or thing performing the action. You simply use zbyt or za before the adjective, add a comma, and follow it with żeby and an infinitive verb.

I am too weak to lift this weight.
Jestem zbyt słaby, żeby podnieść ten ciężar.
He is too old to force us to do it.
On jest za stary, żeby nas do tego zmusić.

The "It" Pronoun Rule

There is a critical difference between English and Polish when the subject of the sentence is the thing being acted upon.

In English, you can simply say "This tea is too hot to drink." In Polish, you cannot leave the verb hanging; you must include an object pronoun referring back to the noun, effectively saying "This tea is too hot to drink it."

You must always match this pronoun to the grammatical gender of the noun you are describing:

  • go for masculine nouns
  • for feminine nouns
  • je for neuter nouns
This problem is too difficult to solve.
Ten problem jest zbyt trudny, żeby go rozwiązać.

Verbs Requiring Other Cases

Most common actions (like drinking, lifting, or solving) take the Accusative pronouns listed above. However, if the infinitive verb naturally requires a different grammatical case, your pronoun must match that case.

A common example when talking about unrealistic demands is the verb sprostać (to cope with / to meet a challenge), which requires the Dative case.

to cope with
sprostać

Because sprostać forces the Dative case, you cannot use go, , or je. Instead, you must use Dative pronouns like mu (for singular masculine/neuter nouns) or im (for plural nouns).

This task is too complicated and unrealistic to cope with.
To zadanie jest zbyt skomplikowane i nierealne, żeby mu sprostać.
My boss's requirements are too unrealistic to meet.
Wymagania mojego szefa są zbyt nierealne, żeby im sprostać.
