Approaching Times and Seasons
The preposition pod usually means "under." However, when combined with the Accusative case for times of day, seasons, or events, it means "towards" or "approaching."
| towards / approaching (+ Accusative) | pod |
| Towards evening it starts to get dark. | Pod wieczór zaczyna się ściemniać. |
| Towards autumn, it inevitably gets dark faster. | Pod jesień nieuchronnie ściemnia się szybciej. |
Shifting Schedules and Deadlines
Notice the phrase pod koniec (towards the end) to describe the approaching end of a month or year.
| We always have a tight schedule towards the end of the month. | Zawsze mamy napięty terminarz pod koniec miesiąca. |
| Towards winter, our boss constantly postpones meetings. | Pod zimę nasz szef ciągle przesuwa spotkania. |
| Towards winter, meetings drag on very much. | Pod zimę spotkania bardzo się przeciągają. |
| I predict that towards the end of the month, meetings will drag on. | Przewiduję, że pod koniec miesiąca spotkania będą się przeciągać. |
| Towards autumn, my sister changed the arrangements. | Pod jesień moja siostra zmieniła ustalenia. |
Approaching an Age
This exact same construction—pod + Accusative—works when talking about someone's age. If a person is nearing a milestone like their forties (czterdziestka) or fifties (pięćdziesiątka), simply place pod before the Accusative form of the decade.
Because these decades are feminine nouns, their Accusative endings change to -ę.
| He is approaching forty, and towards the evening his schedule is tight. | On ma pod czterdziestkę, a pod wieczór jego terminarz jest napięty. |
| The woman approaching fifty predicts changes towards the end of the year. | Kobieta pod pięćdziesiątkę przewiduje zmiany pod koniec roku. |
