Usages of iru
川 に 牛 が います。kawa ni ushi ga imasu.
There is a cow in the river.
王 の 車 に います。ou no kuruma ni imasu.
I'm in the car of the king.
米国 に います。beikoku ni imasu.
I am in the United States.
机 の 下 に 犬 が います。tsukue no shita ni inu ga imasu.
There is a dog under the desk.
中国 および 日本 も 王 が いません。chuugoku oyobi nihon mo ou ga imasen.
China and Japan also do not have a king.
何人 が いました か。nannin ga imashita ka.
How many people were there?
弟 と 妹 は 小学校 に 通って います。otouto to imouto wa shougakkou ni kayotte imasu.
(My) younger brother and younger sister go to elementary school.

Note how the present continuous is used here to indicate on ongoing state, instead of an action in progress.
彼女 は 一人 で アパート に 住んで いる。kanojo wa hitori de apaato ni sunde iru.
She lives alone in an apartment.
小雨 に なりました。 開始して います。kosame ni narimashita. kaishishite imasu.

grammar for indicating an ongoing state or action
みんな 寝て いる。minna nete iru.
Everyone is sleeping.
ポテト サラダ を 作って います。poteto sarada o tsukutte imasu.

彼 は 大変な 状況 に います。kare wa taihenna joukyou ni imasu.
He is in a serious situation.
先 の 木 の 下 に 鶏 が います。saki no ki no shita ni niwatori ga imasu.

いない is the negative form of いる, and いなくて is the connective form of いない
家庭 に は 猫 が います。katei ni wa neko ga imasu.

この クラス に は たくさん の 生徒 が います。kono kurasu ni wa takusan no seito ga imasu.
There are many students in this class.
彼 は 大勢 の 友達 が います。kare wa oozei no tomodachi ga imasu.
He has many friends.
彼 は いつも 私 の そば に います。kare wa itsumo watashi no soba ni imasu.
He is always by my side.
地震 が 起こった 時、 私 は 家 に いました。jishin ga okotta toki, watashi wa ie ni imashita.
