Why is sapevo in the imperfect tense here instead of the passato prossimo (ho saputo)?
In Italian, the imperfect tense is used to describe an ongoing state in the past. Using sapevo means you were in a continuous state of not knowing. If you used the passato prossimo (non ho saputo), it would change the meaning to a single event, meaning you did not find out or learn about the secret at a specific moment in time.
Why do we use a form of sapere here instead of conoscere?
Italian has two different verbs for knowing. You use sapere for facts, pieces of information, and things you can memorize, like a secret. You use conoscere when you are familiar with a person, a place, or a complex topic. Since a secret is a piece of factual information, sapere is the correct choice.
Why is there an il before tuo segreto? Doesn't tuo already mean your?
In English we just use a possessive word, but Italian almost always requires a definite article like il or la before possessives. The phrase literally translates as the your secret. The main exception to this rule is when talking about a singular family member, like tuo fratello for your brother, where the article is dropped.
