Learn Italian: Quale materia preferisci? La matematica. - "Which subject do you prefer?" "Mathematics."

Quale translates to "which" and is used when asking someone to choose from a specific set of options (like school subjects). You can also use che (che materia...), which means "what subject", but quale is very common when picking from a category. You cannot use cosa here, because cosa means "what" on its own and isn't placed right next to a noun.

Why is the verb preferisci and not just "preferi"?

The verb is preferire (to prefer). It belongs to a special group of -ire verbs that insert the letters -isc- into their stem in the present tense for the I, you, he/she/it, and they forms. So for "you prefer", it becomes tu preferisci. Other common verbs that do this are capire (to understand) and finire (to finish).

Does materia always mean "subject"?

In a school or university context, materia means "subject" or "course." However, outside of school, it translates to "material" or "matter," such as in materia prima (raw material).

Why is there a La before matematica? In English, we just answer "Mathematics."
