Questions & Answers about Legga la classifica, per favore.
Why does the sentence use legga instead of leggi for "read"?
Legga is the formal imperative (command) form of leggere (to read), used when addressing someone politely as Lei. If you were talking to a friend or someone younger (tu), you would use the informal command leggi.
Does classifica only mean "standings" in sports?
It is heavily used in sports, but a classifica can be any ranked list, like a music chart or a leaderboard in a game. This is the perfect place to practice the higher ordinal numbers you are learning, like undicesimo (11th) or ventesimo (20th), to read out the ranks!
How does the pronunciation of the "g" change from leggere to legga?
In the infinitive leggere, the double "g" is followed by an "e", making a soft sound like the "j" in "jump". But in legga, the "g" is followed by an "a", which creates a hard sound like the "g" in "get". You pronounce it with a hard "g" sound.
Should I include the formal pronoun Lei before legga to be more polite?
It is not necessary. In Italian, the formal verb conjugation combined with per favore (please) is perfectly polite on its own. Adding Lei might actually sound a bit emphatic or unnatural, as if you are specifically singling them out to read the standings.
