Why use avevate instead of the passato prossimo avete avuto?
We use the imperfetto (avevate) because having a pet is a description of an ongoing state in the past, rather than a single completed action. When describing what things were like or what you used to own, the imperfetto is the best choice.
Which form of "you" is avevate?
It is the voi (plural you) form. In the imperfetto, the verb avere uses the stem ave- and adds the ending -vate, making avevate (you all had / you guys used to have).
Pappagallo is masculine, so why doesn't the adjective divertente end in -o?
