L'inverno è una stagione molto fredda.

From Lesson 74:The four seasons·Italian

Questions & Answers about L'inverno è una stagione molto fredda.

Why does the sentence use L'inverno instead of just Inverno?
In English, we just say "Winter" when talking about the season in general. But in Italian, you almost always need a definite article (the "the" word) for general concepts, including seasons. Because inverno starts with a vowel, we use L'.
Stagione ends in "-e". How can we tell if it's masculine or feminine?
Nouns ending in "-e" can be tricky because they can be either gender. However, we can spot that stagione is feminine here because it is paired with the feminine article una and the feminine adjective fredda. As a handy tip, Italian nouns ending in "-gione" or "-zione" are almost always feminine!
If inverno is masculine, why does the adjective fredda end in a feminine "-a"?
Adjectives always change their endings to match the noun they are directly describing. Here, fredda (cold) is describing stagione (season), which is feminine. It is not directly describing inverno.
Since stagione is feminine, why doesn't molto change to molta?
When molto is used before an adjective to mean "very" (as in "very cold"), it acts as an adverb. Adverbs never change their endings! Molto only changes its ending to match a noun when it means "a lot of" or "many" (like molte stagioni for "many seasons").
