In Italian, the verb piacere works backwards compared to English. Instead of saying "The children like games," Italian phrasing is literally "Games are pleasing TO the children." Ai is the combination of a (to) and the plural article i (the).

Why do we use piacciono here instead of piace?

Because the things being liked—i giochi (the games)—are plural. With this verb, the thing you like is the actual subject of the sentence. If the children liked one single game, you would use piace, but because games are plural, you must use piacciono.

Why do we need the article i before giochi? In English we just say "fun games."

When you talk about a general category of things you like, Italian requires the definite article (the words for "the"). So while in English you just say "I like games," in Italian you always say "I like THE games" (i giochi).

Why is there an "h" in giochi?
