How does the verb studia follow the rules for regular -are verbs?
Studia comes from the regular verb studiare (to study). Because the subject is "the student" (a "he" or "she" / third-person singular), we drop the -are ending from the dictionary form and add -a. This gives us studia.
Why do we use lo instead of il for "the"?
Because the next word, studente, starts with an "s" followed by another consonant ("t"). In Italian, you must use lo instead of il for masculine singular nouns that start with this "s + consonant" combination.
How do I know if studente is masculine or feminine if it ends in -e?
Italian nouns ending in -e can be either masculine or feminine, so you usually just have to memorize their gender. However, the article lo right in front of it is a dead giveaway that studente is masculine in this sentence!
Is qui the only word for "here"?
