Questions & Answers about Le finestre sono aperte.
Why does finestre end in -e?
The singular word for "window" is finestra. In Italian, regular feminine nouns that end in -a change that ending to -eto becomeplural.
Why use le for "the" here?
Le is the pluralfeminine word for "the". We use it here because finestre is a feminine plural noun. If it were masculine plural, we would use the articlei.
Doesn't sono mean "I am"?
It does, but it also means "they are"! The verbessere (to be) uses the exact same word for "I" (io sono) and "they" (loro sono). Since we are talking about the windows ("they"), we use sono.
Why does the word for "open" (aperte) also end in -e?
In Italian, describing words (adjectives) must match the noun they describe. Because le finestre is feminine and plural, the base adjective aperto (open) changes its ending to -e to match the noun perfectly.
