Repeating actions (tornare a)

Doing Something Again

To express doing an action again or returning to a previous state, use the verb tornare (to return) + a + an infinitive verb.

Because tornare involves movement or a change of state, it takes the auxiliary verb essere in compound tenses like the passato prossimo. Remember that the past participle (tornato) must agree with the subject in gender and number.

I returned to live in the small town to hug my old friends again.
Sono tornato a vivere nella cittadina per riabbracciare i miei vecchi amici.

Reciprocal Verbs

When reconnecting with old friends, you will often use reciprocal verbs. Just as with other infinitive constructions, drop the final -e of the infinitive and attach the pronoun directly to the end.

We started seeing each other again at our usual gathering place with the group of friends.
Siamo tornati a vederci al nostro solito ritrovo con la comitiva.
Before organizing the reunion, we started writing to each other again.
Prima di organizzare la rimpatriata, siamo tornati a scriverci.

Different Tenses and Moods

The tornare a structure works with any verb—whether you are describing physical actions or regaining an old feeling—and across all tenses and moods.

We felt an unbreakable harmony again.
Siamo tornati a sentire un affiatamento indissolubile.
You should visit the small town again to reunite with the group of friends.
Dovresti tornare a visitare la cittadina per ricongiungerti con la comitiva.
