Giving Advice with Dovresti
To tell a friend what they "should" do, use dovresti. This is the present conditional tu (you) form of dovere (to have to / must). Like other modal verbs, it is followed directly by an infinitive verb.
| You work too much, you should take a break. | Lavori troppo, dovresti fare una pausa. |
| You are in too much of a hurry, you should slow down. | Hai troppa fretta, dovresti rallentare. |
| You should breathe deeply every morning. | Dovresti respirare profondamente ogni mattina. |
Offering Suggestions with Potresti
For an even gentler suggestion—telling a friend what they "could" do—use potresti (the present conditional tu form of potere). It is also followed by an infinitive.
| You could take a break and drink tea. | Potresti fare una pausa e bere il tè. |
| You could decrease stress with sport. | Potresti diminuire lo stress con lo sport. |
| If you are tired, you could meditate in the garden. | Se sei stanco, potresti meditare in giardino. |
Balance and Well-being
Combine dovresti and potresti with vocabulary about the mind (la mente) or anxiety (l'ansia) to encourage healthy habits and self-care.
| You should control anxiety to feel well. | Dovresti controllare l'ansia per stare bene. |
| You could open the window and breathe fresh air. | Potresti aprire la finestra e respirare aria fresca. |
| You should rest your mind every afternoon. | Dovresti riposare la mente ogni pomeriggio. |
