Questions & Answers about Það er vetur og við liggjum í rúminu og kúrum.
Why do we use liggjum ... og kúrum instead of erum að kúra for 'are snuggling'?
In Icelandic, if you are doing an action while sitting, standing, or lying down, you usually use a posture verb (sitja, standa, or liggja) plus og and the action verb. This sounds much more natural here than the standard vera að continuous form.
Why is the second verb kúrum instead of an infinitive like kúra?
Why is it í rúminu and not í rúmið?
The preposition í takes the dative case when it describes a stationary location. Because we are lying still in the bed, the neuter noun rúm with its attached definite article becomes rúminu. If we were moving or jumping into the bed, it would take the accusative case (í rúmið).
Is Það er vetur the standard way to talk about seasons?
Yes! Just like in English, Icelandic uses the dummy pronoun það (it) to introduce seasons, weather, and time.
