Learn Icelandic: Áætlunin er ný.

In Icelandic, the word for "the" is attached to the end of the noun. The base word is áætlun (schedule or plan), and adding -in makes it "the schedule". This specific ending also gives us a helpful hint that the word is feminine.

Why is the adjective ný (new) used here instead of nýtt or nýr?

Adjectives in Icelandic change to match the gender of the noun they describe. Because áætlun is a feminine noun, the adjective must take the feminine form ný. If the noun were masculine, you would use nýr, and for neuter nouns you would use nýtt.

How do I pronounce the two vowels Áæ together at the start of Áætlunin?

It looks a bit intimidating to English speakers, but you just pronounce each letter's usual sound one after the other. Á sounds like "ow" (as in cow), and æ sounds like "eye" (as in pie). Run them together smoothly, and it sounds roughly like "ow-eye".

Does áætlun only mean "schedule" like a bus timetable?

It is the standard word for a schedule or timetable (which fits perfectly into lessons about telling time), but its broader meaning is "a plan". You will also see it used for travel itineraries, business plans, or even just your general plan for the day.
