Questions & Answers about Færð þú pakkann núna?
Why does the verb færð look so different from its dictionary form?
The dictionary form (the infinitive) is fá (to get or receive). This is a strong verb, which means its core vowel changes in the singular present tense. For fá, the vowel á changes to æ. Because of this, 'I get' is ég fæ and 'you get' is þú færð.
Where does the -rð ending on færð come from?
In the present tense, the 'you' (þú) form of strong verbs usually ends in -rð or -st. After the vowel changes from á to æ, adding this standard þú ending gives us færð.
Why is the verb færð at the very beginning of the sentence?
In Icelandic, you create a yes/no question by putting the verb first. While English uses helper words like 'Do' ('Do you get...?'), Icelandic simply swaps the subject and the verb. Þú færð (You get) becomes Færð þú? (Do you get?).
Why is the word for package written as pakkann here?
The basic word for 'a package' is pakki. Because the package is the object being received (in the accusative case), pakki changes to pakka. To say 'the' package, Icelandic attaches an ending instead of using a separate word. Adding the definite article -nn to pakka gives us pakkann.
