Why do we say myndin and borðið instead of just mynd and borð?
Adding the suffixes -in and -ið changes the words from 'a picture' and 'a table' to 'the picture' and 'the table'. In Icelandic, the word for 'the' attaches to the end of the noun!
Why is the 'the' ending different for myndin (-in) and borðið (-ið)?
It depends on the noun's grammatical gender. Mynd is a feminine noun, so its ending for 'the' is -in. Borð is a neuter noun, so it takes the neuter ending -ið. If we had a masculine noun, it would take -inn.
If I wanted to say 'This is a picture' instead, would I still use myndin?
