Questions & Answers about Besti vélvirkinn ætlar að laga blöndunginn og gírkassann.
The current lesson is about "eiga (það) til að" (to have a tendency to). Why does this sentence use "ætlar að" instead?
While eiga það til að laga would mean the mechanic has a tendency to fix or sometimes fixes the parts, ætlar að laga expresses clear future intent (is going to fix). You will often see intentional action contrasted with habitual tendencies in this unit to help you distinguish between a specific plan and a general habit.
Why do the definite nouns end differently (blöndunginn vs. gírkassann) if both are masculine accusative objects of laga?
It comes down to strong versus weak nouns. Blöndungur (carburetor) is a strong masculine noun, so its accusative is blöndung, and adding the article makes it blöndunginn. Gírkassi (gearbox) is a weak masculine noun ending in a vowel, so its accusative is gírkassa. When you add the definite article to that -a ending, it becomes gírkassann.
Why is the adjective besti rather than the dictionary form bestur?
Because the noun it modifies, vélvirkinn (the mechanic), has the definite article attached. When an adjective describes a definite noun, it must take the weak declension. For a masculine nominative noun, the weak form of bestur is besti.
How do the compound words vélvirkinn and gírkassann break down?
Vélvirkinn comes from vél (machine or engine) and virki (worker or mechanic), plus the definite article -nn. Gírkassann literally translates to the gear box, coming from gír (gear) and kassi (box), plus the article. Icelandic typically builds its modern technical vocabulary by combining everyday root words like this.
