Questions & Answers about Ertu farinn að taka eftir flösunni?
What makes farinn að taka mean "started to notice" rather than "gone to take"?
The phrase vera farinn að followed by an infinitive is a special grammatical structure. Instead of physical movement, it shows that an action or state has begun and is now ongoing. It translates best as "have started to" or "are already doing something".
Why does the sentence use farinn specifically, rather than another form of the word?
In the vera farinn að construction, the past participle of fara must agree with the subject in gender and number. Because it is farinn (masculine singular), we know the person being spoken to is male. If speaking to a female, it would change to farin.
Why does the word for dandruff (flasa) take the dative form flösunni here?
The verb phrase taka eftir means "to notice" and it strictly requires its object to be in the dative case. The feminine noun flasa becomes flösu in the dative, and adding the definite article makes it flösunni.
How is this different from asking Ertu byrjaður að taka eftir flösunni?
While both basically mean "Have you started to notice", the vera farinn að structure emphasizes a shift into a new, continuous state of being. Using byrjaður að is also correct but places slightly more focus on the exact starting point of the action rather than the ongoing reality of it.
