Questions & Answers about Mig vantar saxaða hvítkálið í salatið.
Why is the participle saxaða used instead of the strong form saxað?
Because it modifies a definite noun (hvítkálið). When a past participle acts as an adjective before a noun with the attached definite article, it uses the weak declension. For a neuter accusative singular noun, the weak ending is -a, changing the strong saxað into the weak saxaða.
Why is the noun phrase saxaða hvítkálið in the accusative case here?
It is the object of the impersonal verb vanta (to need or lack). The verb vanta is a double accusative verb: it requires both the person experiencing the need (mig) and the thing being needed (hvítkálið) to be in the accusative case.
Why does the sentence use í salatið when the English translation says 'for the salad'?
In Icelandic, when you are talking about an ingredient meant for a dish, you typically use í (in or into). It takes the accusative case here (salatið instead of the dative salatinu) because it implies the action of putting the cabbage into the salad, rather than it already sitting statically inside it.
If hvítkálið is definite, why isn't there a separate word for 'the' before the adjective?
In everyday Icelandic, when an adjective or participle modifies a definite noun, you simply use the weak form of the adjective (saxaða) and attach the definite article directly to the noun (-ið). The free-standing definite article (hið saxaða hvítkál) sounds extremely formal or literary and is almost never used in normal speech.
