Questions & Answers about Hún hringir á lögregluna strax.
I learned that "to call" is hringja í. Why does this sentence use hringja á?
You use hringja í when calling to speak to someone, like a friend. But you use hringja á when calling for a service to be sent to your location, such as the police, an ambulance, or a taxi.
Why does lögregluna end in -na?
The base word is lögregla (police). To say "the police", you attach the definite article to the end. The preposition á in this phrase requires the accusative case, so the feminine noun gets the accusative article -na, making it lögregluna instead of the dictionary form lögreglan.
Is lögregla a compound word?
Yes! It is made of lög (law) and regla (order or rule). The Icelandic word for police literally means "law and order".
How do I use the word strax?
strax is a very common, unchangeable word meaning "immediately" or "right away". You usually place it at the end of the sentence, just like in English.
