112 is the emergency number for the whole country. What you say when it answers is built on two verbs.

hringja í vs hringja á

You already know hringja í — to phone someone: ég hringi í mömmu. For emergency services Icelandic uses hringja á instead:

kalla á hjálp

kalla á hjálp — to call for help — is the fixed phrase, and the one the national curriculum names outright.

bjarga

bjarga to rescue, to save takes the dative, like hjálpa: læknirinn bjargar sjúklingnum.

missa, deyja, dauður

missa is to lose something you were holding — keep it apart from missa af, to miss a bus or a film, which you already know. deyja is to die and dauður dead.
