Questions & Answers about Sjálfsagt kemur hún seinna.
Why is the verb kemur before the subject hún?
This happens because of the V2 (verb-second) rule in Icelandic. Since the sentence starts with the adverb Sjálfsagt, the verb kemur must take the second position, pushing the subject hún to the third position.
What is the literal meaning of the word Sjálfsagt?
It literally translates to "self-said". It is made up of sjálf (self) and sagt (said). You can think of it as meaning "it goes without saying".
Could I use auðvitað instead of Sjálfsagt here?
Yes, auðvitað also means "of course" and would work perfectly. Sjálfsagt can sometimes carry a slight nuance of "probably" or "I assume so", but in this context, they both show you are confident she will come.
Is seinna related to the word for "late"?
Yes, seinna is the comparative form of the adverb seint (late). So just like in English, it changes from "late" to "later".
