Expressions of Judgment
When expressing a personal judgment or evaluation (e.g., "It is important that..."), the verb in the following að (that) clause takes the subjunctive mood.
Notice how the verb vera (to be) changes from the indicative er to the present subjunctive sé:
| The staff is outstanding. | Starfsfólkið er framúrskarandi. |
| It is important that the staff be outstanding. | Það er mikilvægt að starfsfólkið sé framúrskarandi. |
Common Evaluative Phrases
Evaluative phrases like Það er óviðunandi að... (It is unacceptable that...) and Það er synd að... (It is a pity that...) also trigger the subjunctive. For hafa (to have), the third-person present subjunctive is hafi:
| It is unacceptable that the hotel has mold. | Það er óviðunandi að hótelið hafi myglu. |
| It is a pity that the facility is so bad. | Það er synd að aðstaðan sé svona slæm. |
Recognizing Subjunctive Verbs
Other common triggers include Það er skrýtið að... (It is strange that...), Það er frábært að... (It is great that...), and Það er nauðsynlegt að... (It is necessary that...).
For many verbs, the present subjunctive is formed by adding -i to the stem for all singular subjects. For example, þvo (to wash) becomes þvoi, skilja (to leave) becomes skilji, and lesa (to read) becomes lesi:
| It is strange that the maid does not wash the sheet. | Það er skrýtið að þernan þvoi ekki lakið. |
| It is great that the guest leaves a tip. | Það er frábært að gesturinn skilji eftir þjórfé. |
| It is necessary that the staff read the review. | Það er nauðsynlegt að starfsfólkið lesi umsögnina. |
