Starting and Stopping Actions
To describe starting or stopping an ongoing action, use the verbs byrja (to begin) or hætta (to stop), followed by að and the infinitive form of the main verb.

Notice that the main action being performed stays in the infinitive:
| The production begins when the conveyor belt starts to work. | Framleiðslan byrjar þegar færibandið byrjar að vinna. |
| You must press the emergency button if the conveyor belt stops working. | Þú þarft að ýta á neyðarhnappinn ef færibandið hættir að vinna. |
Past Tense
When reporting what happened on the assembly line, use the past tense forms of the aspectual verbs. The main verb still remains in the infinitive with að:
- byrjaði (started)
- hætti (stopped)
| The machine started to vibrate, so I pressed the switch. | Vélin byrjaði að titra svo ég ýtti á rofann. |
| Did the pump stop leaking? | Hætti dælan að leka? |
Cause and Effect
You can easily chain these starting and stopping phrases together to explain the consequences of equipment failure using connecting words like ef (if) or af því að (because).
