The Acquired State (vera kominn með)
To express that you have recently acquired something or reached a state of having it, Icelandic uses the phrase vera kominn með. Literally "to be come with," it translates to "to have gotten" or "to have acquired."
[Subject] + [vera] + [kominn] + með + [Accusative Object]
Because kominn is a past participle describing the subject, it must agree with the subject in gender and number (e.g., kominn for masculine singular, komin for feminine singular, and komin for neuter plural). The object following með is always in the accusative case.
| I have gotten the tattoo and it is permanent. | Ég er komin með húðflúrið og það er varanlegt. |
| The tattoo artist has gotten the sketch and all the stuff. | Húðflúrarinn er kominn með skissuna og allt dótið. |
| They have gotten an infection because the tattoo artist didn't disinfect the needle. | Þau eru komin með sýkingu af því að húðflúrarinn sótthreinsaði ekki nálina. |
At the Studio
This phrase is highly useful for talking about steps in a process, such as getting a new tattoo or piercing, or picking up supplies.
| The tattoo artist has got the sketch and the anesthetic. | Húðflúrarinn er kominn með skissuna og deyfiefnið. |
| Have you finally gotten the nose ring? It is very beautiful. | Ert þú loksins kominn með neflokkinn? Hann er mjög fallegur. |
Aftercare and Healing
You can also use vera kominn með to describe acquiring a physical condition, such as getting an infection.
| Have you gotten the cream? The tattoo isn't healing. | Ert þú kominn með kremið? Húðflúrið grær ekki. |
| When one has gotten a permanent nose ring, one must disinfect it. | Þegar maður er kominn með varanlegan neflokk verður maður að sótthreinsa hann. |
