Questions & Answers about Bir adım ileri attı ve konuşmaya başladı.
Why is there no subject pronoun? Who is doing the action?
Turkish commonly drops subject pronouns because the verb ending shows person/number. Both attı and başladı are 3rd person singular past, so the subject is understood as “he/she/it.” If you want to make it explicit, add o at the start: O bir adım ileri attı ve konuşmaya başladı. For a plural subject: Onlar bir adım ileri attılar ve konuşmaya başladılar.
Doesn’t atmak mean “to throw”? How can attı be “took (a step)”?
Yes, basic atmak = “to throw,” but Turkish uses it in many light-verb collocations. Adım atmak literally “to throw a step,” idiomatically “to take a step.” Similar patterns: mesaj attı (sent a text), çığlık attı (let out a scream), kahkaha attı (burst out laughing).
Why is adım not marked with the accusative (adımı) even though it’s an object?
Indefinite direct objects in Turkish are left unmarked. Bir adım attı = “(s/he) took a step.” If you mark it accusative, you make it definite: adımı attı = “(s/he) took the step.” You’ll see accusative with definites like İlk adımı attı (“(s/he) took the first step”).
Why is it ileri and not ileriye?
