Questions & Answers about Bussen är sen; därför tar jag taxi.
Why is there a semicolon before därför instead of a comma?
Because därför is an adverb meaning “therefore,” not a conjunction. In Swedish, you shouldn’t join two independent clauses with just a comma when the second starts with därför. Use:
- a semicolon: Bussen är sen; därför tar jag taxi.
- or a period: Bussen är sen. Därför tar jag taxi.
- or a comma + a coordinating conjunction like så: Bussen är sen, så jag tar taxi.
Should därför be capitalized after the semicolon?
No. After a semicolon you continue with lowercase: …; därför …. Also note spacing: no space before the semicolon, one space after.
Why is it därför tar jag and not därför jag tar?
Swedish main clauses follow the V2 rule: the finite verb must be in second position. When an adverbial like därför comes first, the verb (tar) comes next, then the subject (jag): [Adverbial] + [Verb] + [Subject] … So Därför tar jag … is correct. Därför jag tar … would suggest a subordinate “because” clause, which needs att or eftersom (see below).
Can I start a new sentence with Därför?
Yes. Bussen är sen. Därför tar jag taxi. is perfectly natural and maybe a bit punchier stylistically.
