Why does Russian use У меня to mean “I have”? Why not just я or я имею?
Russian usually expresses possession with the construction у + genitive pronoun/noun plus an existential verb: есть in the positive, нет in the negative. So У меня есть… = “There is … at me” → “I have…”. In everyday speech, иметь (“to have”) is rare for simple possession and sounds formal or technical. Use иметь in set phrases like иметь значение (“to matter”) or in official style, but prefer у меня есть/нет for ordinary “I have/I don’t have.”
Why is it нет and not не есть?
In Russian, the negative existential is the standalone word нет (“there is no/there are no”). You don’t say не есть here. Compare:
- Positive: У меня есть информация.
- Negative: У меня нет информации. In positive statements есть can even be omitted: У меня информация (context-dependent), but you cannot omit нет in the negative.
Why is информации in the genitive case?

Can I say никакая информация?
