In Russian, the present-tense form of быть is almost always omitted. We don’t say Стол есть у окна. Instead, you simply state the subject, its adjective, and a motion‐or‐location verb like стоять. The “to be” meaning is either implied or conveyed by verbs such as стоять (“to stand”), лежать (“to lie”), etc.

What does стоит mean, and why is it used here?

стоит is the third‐person singular present of стоять, meaning “stands.” It tells us the table is in an upright position. Russian often uses posture verbs to describe location. If the table were on its side, you’d say стол лежит (“the table lies”).

Why is у окна in the genitive case?

The preposition у (“by” or “at”) always takes the genitive case. So окно (nominative) becomes окна (genitive) to express proximity: “by the window.”

Can I start the sentence with У окна instead of Низкий стол?

Yes. Russian word order is relatively free. Saying У окна стоит низкий стол shifts the emphasis onto the location (“It’s by the window that a low table stands”). The basic meaning remains the same.
