What does am mean here?
Am means I have.
It is the 1st person singular form of the verb a avea = to have.
So:
- am = I have
- ai = you have
- are = he/she has
In Am un gând., Romanian does not need a separate subject pronoun, so am already includes the idea of I.
Why isn’t it Eu am un gând?
It can be Eu am un gând, but Romanian often drops the subject pronoun because the verb ending already shows who the subject is.
So:
- Am un gând. = I have a thought.
- Eu am un gând. = I have a thought. (with extra emphasis on I)
You would use eu if you want contrast or emphasis, for example:
- Eu am un gând, nu el. = I have a thought, not him.
