Questions & Answers about Gdy kierowca nie jest punktualny, pasażerowie spóźniają się do pracy.

What does gdy mean here and can I replace it with kiedy?

gdy is a conjunction meaning “when” in a temporal sense. It introduces a time clause. You can often replace it with kiedy (also “when”) without changing the meaning:
• Gdy kierowca nie jest punktualny…
• Kiedy kierowca nie jest punktualny…
Both are correct; gdy is slightly more formal/written, kiedy more colloquial.

Why is there a comma after the gdy-clause?

Polish punctuation requires a comma between a subordinate clause and the main clause when the subordinate clause comes first. Here, Gdy kierowca nie jest punktualny is a subordinate (time) clause, so it’s separated by a comma from the main clause pasażerowie spóźniają się do pracy.

What’s the difference between gdy and jeżeli/jeśli?

gdy = “when” (time)
jeżeli/jeśli = “if” (condition)
Use gdy to talk about WHEN something happens. Use jeżeli/jeśli to talk about IF something happens.
Example:
• Gdy pada, bierzemy parasol. (“When it rains…”)
• Jeśli będzie padać, weź parasol. (“If it rains…”)
