Questions & Answers about Hari itu sangat cantik.

Why does the sentence use cantik to describe a day? Isn’t cantik typically used for people?

In Indonesian, cantik can describe not just someone’s appearance but also things, situations, or even a day that is exceptionally pleasant or beautiful. It’s somewhat poetic or more expressive. Another common word to describe a beautiful day is indah, but you can use cantik too for a more personal or emotional tone.

Is sangat the only way to say “very” in Indonesian?

No. Other words like sekali or amat can also mean “very.” For instance, you could say Hari itu cantik sekali (That day was really beautiful). Sangat emphasizes the adjective, but so do sekali and amat.

Can cantik also be used for describing men in Indonesian?

Usually, cantik is used for women or for objects/situations that evoke beauty in a feminine or delicate sense. For men, the word tampan (handsome) is more common. However, some people might still use cantik humorously or poetically for men, but it’s less typical.

Is it possible to drop itu and just say Hari sangat cantik?

Yes, you could say Hari sangat cantik, which still means the day is very beautiful. However, itu helps specify “that” day (perhaps one particular day in the past) rather than just any day. It’s context-dependent.
