What does the word ότι do in this sentence?
It’s a complementizer meaning “that.” It introduces a clause: Ξέρω ότι … = “I know that …”. It doesn’t carry meaning by itself; it just links the verb Ξέρω to the statement that follows.
Can I replace ότι with πως?
Yes. Ξέρω πως είσαι στο γραφείο is very common and means the same thing. Nuance:
- ότι feels a bit more neutral/formal.
- πως is often more conversational/natural. Both are correct in standard Greek.
Can I just drop ότι like in English (“I know you’re…”)?
Generally no in standard Greek. You usually keep ότι/πως: Ξέρω ότι/πως είσαι…. In casual speech you might hear Ξέρω είσαι…, but learners should prefer using ότι/πως.
What’s the difference between ότι and ό,τι?
- ότι = “that” (complementizer), as in this sentence.

Why is there no word for “you”? Where did the subject go?

What’s the difference between είσαι and είστε?

What exactly is στο?
στο is the contraction of σε + το (“in/at + the,” neuter). With other genders/numbers:
- στον = σε + τον (masculine)
- στη(ν) = σε + την (feminine; the final -ν appears before vowels and some consonants)
- στα = σε + τα (plural neuter) Here, γραφείο is neuter, so we use στο γραφείο.
Does γραφείο mean “office” or “desk”?
Both, depending on context:
- στο γραφείο can mean “at the office (workplace)” or “at the desk.” To be specific:
- “at your desk”: στο γραφείο σου
- “at work”: στη δουλειά is also very common and unambiguous.
Is the spelling and stress of γραφείο correct? Where’s the stress?
Yes: γραφείο. It has three syllables: gra-fi-o, with stress on the middle one: gra-FEE-o. The plural is γραφεία (gra-FEE-a).
How do I pronounce the whole sentence?
Approximate guide:

Can I say Το ξέρω ότι είσαι στο γραφείο?
You’ll hear it, but it’s stylistically heavier. Standard and cleaner is Ξέρω ότι είσαι στο γραφείο. If you front the clause for emphasis, you can say: Ότι είσαι στο γραφείο, το ξέρω (marked, emphatic).
How would I say “I don’t know if you’re at the office”?
Use αν for “if/whether,” not ότι:
- Δεν ξέρω αν είσαι στο γραφείο. Similarly: Δεν ξέρω αν είστε στο γραφείο. (plural/polite)
Could I use γιατί instead of ότι?
No. γιατί means “why” or “because.” It cannot introduce a “that”-clause after Ξέρω. Use ότι or πως.
Are there more formal alternatives to Ξέρω?
Yes, Γνωρίζω is more formal: Γνωρίζω ότι είσαι στο γραφείο. It’s fine in writing or formal speech, but in everyday conversation Ξέρω is more natural.
