Questions & Answers about Brauchen Sie den Grundriss oder die Nutzungsordnung?
Why is Sie capitalized here?
In German, Sie with a capital S is the formal word for you.
- Sie = formal you
- sie = she or they, depending on context
So Brauchen Sie ... ? is a polite/formal way to ask someone if they need something. You would use this with a customer, stranger, client, or someone you do not know well.
Why does the sentence start with Brauchen instead of Sie?
Because this is a yes/no question in German.
In a normal statement, the verb usually comes second:
- Sie brauchen den Grundriss. = You need the floor plan.
But in a yes/no question, German typically puts the conjugated verb first:
- Brauchen Sie den Grundriss? = Do you need the floor plan?
So the pattern is:
- Verb + subject + rest of sentence
That is very common in German.
Why is it den Grundriss and not der Grundriss?
