Questions & Answers about Ob der Hochzeitsplaner das Catering rettet, bleibt ungewiss.
Why doesn't the main clause have a subject like es?
The entire clause Ob der Hochzeitsplaner das Catering rettet acts as the subject of the sentence. Because this subject clause takes up Position 1, the main verb bleibt comes right after it in Position 2. You don't need a placeholder like es here, though you would use one if you flipped the sentence order to Es bleibt ungewiss, ob...
Why does the verb bleibt come immediately after the comma?
In a German main clause, the conjugated verb must take Position 2. Because the entire indirect question before the comma counts as a single structural block occupying Position 1, the main verb bleibt has to immediately follow the comma to claim Position 2.
Could I use wenn instead of ob here?
No, you must use ob. In English, we often use "if" to mean "whether" ("It remains uncertain if..."). But German strictly separates these: ob is used for yes/no indirect questions ("whether"), while wenn is only for conditional "if" or temporal "whenever". Since the sentence expresses a yes/no uncertainty, ob is mandatory.
Why does the English loanword Catering take the neuter article das?
When German adopts English verbs ending in "-ing" to use as nouns, they almost always become neuter. You will see the same pattern with words like das Training, das Meeting, or das Timing.
