Questions & Answers about Der Zirkus kommt samt Direktor und Gefolge.
Why are there no articles before Direktor and Gefolge after samt?
While the preposition samt always takes the dative case, it is very common to drop the articles entirely after it. This happens especially when listing people, items, or parts of a larger group that naturally belong together as a package.
If samt takes the dative case, why don't we see any dative endings on Direktor or Gefolge?
In German, the dative case is usually shown by the article (like dem), while the noun itself rarely changes in the singular. Because we dropped the articles after samt, and because neither Direktor (masculine) nor Gefolge (neuter) takes a special singular dative ending, there are simply no visible dative markers left.
Could I just use mit instead of samt in this sentence?
Grammatically yes, but it changes the tone. If you use mit, you would usually include the articles (mit dem Direktor und dem Gefolge). Using samt without articles elevates the register to sound a bit more formal or journalistic, and it strongly emphasizes that the circus, director, and entourage arrive together as one indivisible unit.
What type of noun is Gefolge?
Das Gefolge is a neuter collective noun meaning an entourage, retinue, or group of followers. Because it already describes a group as an abstract whole, it works very naturally in this prepositional phrase without an article.
