Questions & Answers about Haben Sie das Kennzeichen etwa nicht notiert?
How does the word etwa change the tone of this question?
Without etwa, the sentence Haben Sie das Kennzeichen nicht notiert? is a neutral request for information: "Did you not note down the license plate?" By adding the modal particle etwa, the speaker injects a strong sense of disbelief, concern, or shock. It turns the sentence into something like, "Don't tell me you didn't..." or "Did you seriously not...?"
Why is etwa placed immediately before nicht?
Modal particles generally sit in the middle of a sentence, right before the specific idea they are emphasizing. Here, the speaker is expressing shock specifically about the negative fact—the failure to write the number down. Therefore, etwa goes right before nicht notiert.
I noticed the past participle is notiert. Why doesn't it have a ge- prefix like most past participles?
Verbs that end in -ieren (such as notieren, studieren, passieren) never take a ge- prefix in their past participle form. They simply take a -t at the end of the verb stem.
Could I use aufgeschrieben instead of notiert here?
Yes, aufgeschrieben (the past participle of aufschreiben) means exactly the same thing and works perfectly. notieren sounds slightly more formal or bureaucratic, which fits naturally in a context where you are dealing with a license plate (das Kennzeichen) after an accident or incident.
